In September 2023 all Southport Learning Trust schools will have joined the prestigious Latin Excellence Programme, a 4-year Department for Education national initiative aimed at developing and supporting Latin and Classics departments. Working closely with the Centre for Latin Excellence based in Pimlico Academy, London our Trust schools are sharing an ambitious vision to include Latin in the curriculum to support pupils’ wider development which is often only afforded to the private sector but has been an integral part of Greenbank High’s curriculum for a number of years.

Being part of the Latin Excellence Programme enables Southport Learning Trust secondary schools to receive:

  • Funding: this comes directly from the DfE and is intended to support teacher time, administration and printing costs, and bursary costs to support enrichment for students eligible for Pupil Premium
  • Enrichment: throughout the life of the programme, our pupils will benefit from activities and trips. This includes summer residential in the UK and international trips to places of interest, specifically Greece and Italy
  • Expert support: our teachers receive dedicated support from expert practitioners, who provide guidance, feedback and training .
  • Training: our teachers receive regular, high-quality CPD for teaching Latin in the state sector, closely aligned with the ECF and NPQs.

We are extremely excited to be part of the Latin Excellence Programme and look forward to further developing Latin at our Trust schools in a sustainable and prosperous way.
